Inside the 30th Annual ASCAP Film Scoring Workshop

Go behind the scenes of our 30th annual ASCAP Film Scoring Workshop, held throughout the summer of 2018 in Los Angeles. Featured speakers include composers Benjamin Wallfisch and Matthew Margeson, who spoke to this year’s class at the renowned Remote Control Studios in Santa Monica; you’ll also see clips of the culminating event, a live recording session with a 64-piece orchestra.

ASCAP’s annual Film Scoring Workshop offers a one-of-a-kind experience for aspiring composers of film, TV and other visual media. During this month-long, immersive program, 12 participants from around the world will learn about the business of film music from “A list” Hollywood studio executives, agents, attorneys and music supervisors. It culminates when each aspiring composer has the opportunity to record their original score for a major motion picture scene using the same tools as a world-class composer: a 64-piece orchestra at the historic Newman Scoring Stage at FOX Studios, joined by a legendary scoring mixer, music editors, copyists and professional composers acting as mentors.

The Workshop is led by Emmy Award-winning composer and ASCAP Board member Richard Bellis, and produced by ASCAP Film/TV membership executives Michael Todd and Jennifer Harmon. Participants are chosen from more than 300 applicants by a team of 20 professional composers. The Workshop is generously supported by The ASCAP Foundation Irving Caesar Fund.
